Inspired Installations by Peirce Students
Whoa, it's after midnight already?? YESTERDAY, Peirce Elementary School students from Ms. McManus's 4th grade class travelled to beautiful Menotomy Rocks Park for Part Two of the Andy Goldsworthy Project. It was an experience they will hopefully remember forever.
The outting began with a color matching exercise. Students were given paint chips and were challenged to find objects in nature that matched the colors on their strips. They found leaves, mushrooms, tree bark, pine needles, and a picnic table to match their given color charts.
To warm up (It was only 45*F outside!), they took a brief serpentine-like jog. The fourth graders ran through the woods in single-file, weaving in and out of the pine trees like several Andy Goldsworthy creations.
After a lesson in identifying Poison Ivy, the students gathered pinecones and created a unified installation that weaved in and out of the pine trees.
Next, we broke up into small groups, dispersed throughout the woods, and began working on our uniquely "Inspired Installations." After an hour of discussing & planning, hunting & gathering, composing & creating, and building & arranging, the masterpieces were complete. The results were amazing! Then we toured the installations of our outdoor gallery: A triangular stick structure, a pinecone spiral, a three-part series of concentric colorful rings, and a stone snake-on-a-bridge.
Finally, everyone posed for a class photo to remember the Field Trip.
